Be Fast
The more liquid that sets the worse the stain will be and the harder it will be to clean. Make sure to be quick and get a towel as soon as possible to start soaking up as much wine as possible. Make sure to use an up and down motion instead of a rubbing one. Rubbing will pick up some wine but also push more of it further into the carpet at the same time making removing the stain substantially harder in the end and increasing the size of the stain. Up and down motions starting from the outside inward picks up as much wine as possible without rubbing it in.
Blot the Wine with Cold Water
When it gets impossible to blot out more get the stain wet again with a small amount of cold water to help dilute the wine a bit more and repeat the above step until the carpet is dry again. Remember not to use too much water or again risk making the stain larger.
Salt
Pour salt over the stain while its still wet and it should drain most of the moisture and stain out over the next few hours. This doesn't work at all on dry stains so make sure to get this applied fairly fast after the original spill.
